The Watchman's reading is not just about knowledge, but also about mood and immersing yourself in a conducive environment.
Paul... "Peter Robb's 'Midnight in Sicily' was the book I took with me to Sicily in 1997, the year Janet and I married , in a small village on the side of the volcano Mt Enta, in Biancavilla, service performed by our good friend Padre Pino Salerno. Last year I took Peter Robb's book 'Street Fight in Naples' to Sicily for our self funded study tour over two months. A much harder read, but it gave me focus on Merisi. We took the time to travel down to Syracuse just to see his painting 'The burial of St. Lucy' - what a reward".
History; Merisi Caravaggio arrived in Syracuse on Sicily's south-east coast on the run from a knight he had offended in Malta. Here he painted this immense canvas depicting the burial of the early Christian martyr, Saint Lucy. Lucy had been buried in the catacombs on the outskirts of Syracuse and the church built on the site was undergoing restoration in 1608. Caravaggio donated the painting to the nuns that looked after him in Syracuse.
